At the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show Peugeot revealed a hybrid-electric crossover station wagon variant of the 508. To distinguish it from other 508s, the RXH features flared wheel arches as well as a new color-coded grill with 3 columns of LED headlights on each side. The Hybrid4 powertrain combined a 120kW 2.0 litre HDi FAP diesel engine with a 28kW electric motor to lower fuel consumption to 4.2 l/100km. The RXH is scheduled to be released in early 2012.

A concept "hybrid-power" car prefiguring the style of the future 508 coupe, called the 5 by Peugeot was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010. Sources reported that 5 by Peugeot would go on sale in 2012.

Peugeot says all 508 RXH crossovers feature the automaker's through-the-road HYbrid4 technology, which employs a 163-horsepower 2.0-liter HDi diesel engine to drive the front wheels and a 37-hp electric motor to spin the rears. Combined, the diesel-electric hybrid drive unit delivers up to 200 horsepower and cranks out 332 pound-feet of torque.

The 508 RXH is capable of electric-only operation, though Peugeot has not yet revealed the crossover's "zero-emissions" range. The automaker says the 508 RXH is quite the fuel-sipper, consuming less than 4.2 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (56 miles per gallon U.S.) on the combined cycle. Meanwhile, the diesel hybrid emits only 109 g/km of CO2.

Peugeot had the world's first diesel-electric hybrid with its 3008 HYbrid4, and now the brand has another one on the way, the 508 RXH. It will be the new top-of-the-line wagon model in the French carmaker's 508 line.

This all-wheel drive electric hybrid will offer 200 horsepower and an all-electric mode when it debuts at next month's 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The powertrain combines an electric motor driving the rear wheels, and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel powering the fronts, in what's called a "through-the-road hybrid" setup.
